RESEARCH TEAM FOR THE STUDY OF ANCIENT THOUGHT
The members of the research team pursue two types of research activities: besides their individual research projects (see the profiles of particular researchers) they are involved in a number of collective endeavours. The goal of these collective activities is to create a platform enabling (1) encounters and discussions in the larger community of ancient philosophy specialists in the Czech Republic, as well as (2) collaboration with foreign researchers on topics of shared interest.
The regular collective activities include the following seminars and workshops:
1. Series of "work in progress" seminars in ancient philosophy allowing members of the research team and specialists from other institutions (universities or other research groups) to gain valuable and state of the art feedback on their work. (organised by V. Mikeš; list of presentations in 2014-2019).
2. Series of subject-specific workshops focused on Aristotle and his heritage (organised by K. Boháček; list of workshops)
3. Seminars on ancient philosophy (organised by M. Havrda under the auspices of the Fellowship of J. E. Purkyně). List of seminars.

Mgr. Vladimír Mikeš, Ph.D. - deputy head mikes[at]flu.cas.cz His current interests lie mainly in questions of Stoic metaphysics, physics and ethics, he centres also on the broader context of the philosophy of the Hellenistic period, with focus on trying to identify its starting points (Aristotle) and later resonances (Plotinus). His interests include also Presocratic philosophy and the philosophy of the Classical period (especially Heraclitus and Plato). Currently he works on the theory of language (Plato) and relation of philosophy and rhetorics (Plato, thes Stoics). |

MA Sean Coughlin, Ph.D. - research associate couhglin[at]flu.cas.cz Principal Investigator of the GACR-funded research project, Alchemies of Scent. He holds a PhD in philosophy from the University of Western Ontario and a BA in philosophy and classics from McGill University in Canada. From 2014–2021, he worked research fellow at the Department of Classics, Humboldt University of Berlin. Dr. Coughlin’s research interests are in Greco-Roman science and medicine, particularly Aristotelian science and its reception; he is also interested in the application of empirical and experimental methods to the history of ancient science |

Mgr. Matyáš Havrda, Ph.D., Res. Prof. havrda[at]flu.cas.cz His main line of interest lies with epistemological issues in post-Hellenistic (Christian, medical, and Aristotelian) philosophy; he also does research on ancient ethics, psychology, and medical physiology. His present project deals with Galen and the reception history of Aristotle’s theory of proof. He is also involved in the Czech translation of Aristotle’s Nicomachean ethics. |

Dr. Vítek has been involved in ancient Greek philosophy and religion and their blending and mutual relations. In philosophy he examines the outstanding persons of Pre-Socratics thinking (Empedocles, Heraclitus, Parmenides) and philosophical-religious movement (Orphism, Pythagoreanism), in religion he analyses structure, nature and background of various rituals, ideas and mythologemata (especially in area of divination). He follows the same themes in his lecture courses, which take place at various universities (currently in Faculty of Humanities, Charles University in Prague).
